MantraCRUSH Analog non linear sequencer station with envelope filter and delay.
The MantraCRUSH definitely exceeds all imagination we might have had about building effects.
The MantraCRUSH is a melodic rhythmic machine that is a result of a long experimentation process and endless research for over a year. Many different versions were bread-boarded and stripped off resulting in a very well thought and perfectly functional last prototype that then magically worked like a charm. We proudly offer the first ever non-linear sequence flow by using capacitors the “wrong” way and discarding any electronics book proving that one can manipulate the CD4017 sequencer chip further in a less conventional way. The circuit is stable, reliable and user friendly. The enclosure is one big beautiful piece of art remines of old video game consoles found at the video arcades.
Why MantraCRUSH?
The Mantra Crush is called like that for a reason.
Mantra means a mystical formula of invocation or incantation. It is a continuation or repetiton of any voice, sound, noise or melody.
The device offers an endless loop of eight or four voices in sequence that can also become either full arpeggios or get crushed into white noise. Each sequence is equipped with it's own turning knob to up/down scale within the boundaries of the sound generator. An extra 3-position toggle switch awakes the white noise crushes or the arpeggios of each sequence stage.
Arpeggios are found everywhere on the dial once the toggle is in arpeggio mode. turning the sequence knob will result in different arpeggio lenghts and characteristics from just a note bending all the way to 5 or more notes arpeggio.
White noise crushes will occur only when the sequence's turning knob is maxed out /turned ll the way to the right!
The sound generator is a take on the famous Stepped Tone Generator (a.k.a Atari punk console by many) that was introduced by Forrest M.Mims in his engineer’s notebook series. This unbelievable application of the NE556 is why we will always owe him a lot.
We improved the tracking and tonal range by using different potentiometer values allowing an even deeper bass function.
The envelope Filter:
The envelope Filter is our familiar Amphibian circuit. It’s a very wide and deep envelope filter that can not only wah-wah but can also quack as well. It covers the entire tonal range with the friendly use of only two knobs to shape the character and the band pass of the envelope.
The delay:
The delay is the first delay stage of the Planet Pudding delay. It is rich, warm, lush & analog sounding. It brings forth a certain reverb with it, turning the unit’s oscillating roughness into a creamy dreamy inspiring and meditative mantra you would like to leave on circulating in the room for ever.
Operating the MantraCRSUH unit.
The turning knobs:
RED – overall volume
GRAY – overall tone
GREEN –sequencer velocity
BLUE – tone generator frequency
PURPLE – tone generator range
WHITE – envelope range
YELLOW – envelope color
PINK – (left) delay repeats
PINK – (right) delay time
PINK – (below) delay mix
ORANGE – eight sequencer scales.
Toggle switches:
Red upper left – ON/OFF device (Red LED)
Red upper middle – ON/OFF envelope filter (Yellow LED)
Red upper right – ON/OFF delay (Pink LED)
White upper switch – Hold sequence
White lower switch – 4/8 sequencer loop controller
The 8 three-position toggle switches – select between each sequence's character function.
Normal tone (mid position),
White noise (right position when knob is maxed)
Arpeggio (left position)
A red LED visually accompanies each stage. Connect to just about anything using the output Jack.
The unit takes 9-Volt charge with negative center.
